Channel Islands switchover moved up

27 January 2009
The Channel Islands will undergo digital switchover far earlier than previously announced, Digital UK has announced.

The process will begin on the Fremont Point transmitter and its seven relay masts across Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney in November 2010. Switchover had originally been scheduled for the first quarter of 2013 because of negotiations over spectrum use with France. With French plans for digital switchover now finalised, it has been possible to move up the date.

'Today's announcement is great news for the Channel Islands,' said Bill Taylor, Digital UK's regional manager. 'Switchover will mean virtually all Islanders have a choice of ways to receive digital TV for the first time.'

Final dates have yet to be confirmed, and the Islands will receive only the three public service multiplexes once switchover is complete in the region.
