FM aerials are used for the reception of Radio transmitions which used frequency modulation to transmit the information. The aerials used for this type of application are split into two designs, the Yagi and the Halo.
A Yagi FM aerial has high gain and is directional, The antenna is best suited to aerials of low signal strength but it suffers from only being able to receive signals from the direction it is pointed.
A Halo FM aerial (often called an FM Omni) has low gain and is omni-directional. It is best suited to areas which have high signal strength and can be used to receive signals from transmitters in any direction.
